Vocational Training at Upohar

Vocational Training Centre at Upohar

India with the youngest population in the world has the unique manpower strength to tackle the shortage of productive labour in a business scenario dominated by the ageing force. On the flipside, due to the lack of formal training, supply of unskilled labour is high but wages they demand is low. Because the industrial sector, of our country, is fundamentally not designed to offer jobs to people with less formal education.

Currently, facilities imparting skill development programs caters to about 3 million people each year while the total labour force stands at 400 million. Vocational education and training should be designed to train for employment with flexibility of catering to a wide variety of requirements. Prepare youth for a vocation of their choice, reduce unemployment and enable them to earn higher wages through higher productivity.

Upohar -The Condoville is a mixed-income group housing project for the LlG, MIG and HIG segments. It envisages better living conditions and facilities for the LlG and MIG that are seen for the first time ever in these segments, like high speed lifts, well developed green spaces and a Residents' Activity Centre that has a health-club, lap pool and other recreation.

Vocational Training Centre at Upohar has been designed with the aim of making a significant contribution towards society. The Vocational Training Centre primarily focuses to reduce unemployment as best as possible. The Vocational Training Centre is proposed to be one of the components of Upohar -The Condoville. The purpose will be to create a pool of skilled labour to meet the growing needs of the community and the industry.

The courses offered will be aimed at local youth wishing to acquire various vocational skills as a source of income. The courses could cover various fields ranging from carpentry, light duty tools and dye making to some emerging fields related to mobile phones and computers.

The institution will cover an area of 35000 sqft with the necessary administrative offices, teachers' rooms, housing facilities. Each course will have its own room with appropriate facilities like work tables, workshop, laboratory and tools storage space. Each room will also ensure good ventilation, air and light. The number of students per discipline will be limited to 15, ensuring adequate guidance for everyone. Every course will have its own trained Course Instructor and an Assistant. It will also provide facilities for students and teachers like canteens, toilets, gathering area as well as area for extra-curricular activities. We also envision two large workshops that will accommodate the entire institution's student population to work on larger work tools, instruments and machines. This workshop will be designed to minimise noise penetration, vibrations etc. while using larger machinery.

The Vocational Training Centre will be housed over two floors. This will accommodate all staff rooms, workshops, laboratories, course rooms, offices, seminar rooms, separate dormitories for men and women, library, computer room, toilets, canteen etc. There will be provision to house 44 men and 27 women, a computer room that will put up 40 persons at a time a library and reading room that will hold up to 40 persons.

We hope that the Vocational Training Centre will benefit the youth in and around the vicinity of Upohar-The Condoville and they, in turn, will make a significant contribution towards the development of our country and reduce of unemployment.

  • Refrigeration and air-conditioner repairing

Town Hall Restoration

Homage Trust - Town Hall Restoration

To commemorate Kolkata's tercentenary, the project A Homage was launched by Shri Suresh Neotia and Shri Harshvardhan Neotia, sponsored by Gujarat Ambuja Cements, in association with the Government of West Bengal, to honour some of the great sons of Bengal.

The renowned painter Bikash Bhattacharya was requested to portray 12 eminent sons of Bengal like Raja Rammohan Roy, Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore... In 1992 the paintings were auctioned at Victoria Memorial's Darbar Hall. The then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Shri Jyoti Basu presided over the auction. The city's corporates participated generously. All paintings were sold and a fund of Rs. 1.15 crore was created, in the name of A Homage Trust. The proceeds were meant to help create a civic amenity for Kolkata.

The trustees of A Homage Trust were happy to assign the entire fund to restore the Town Hall. The KMC agreed to the restoration proposal submitted by the Trust. The restoration was celebrated on Poila Boisakh, April 15, 1998 creating awareness for restoration of the city's cultural heritage. It was the first step towards a new paradigm for the city.
