Ambuja Realty reaches out to the AILA victims in Sunderbans |
|
Relief for the cyclone-affected in Sunderbans Ambuja Realty and Friends of Ambuja arranged for relief for the AILA victims on the 5th of June. The Relief team comprised 30 members. It was a humbling experience for the team to witness the plight of the villagers who lost everything to the cyclone – which in its type and dimension was the first in their lifetime. With agriculture being the only source of livelihood and survival, the cyclone inundated the fields with saline water resulting in a halt in cultivation for at least one year. Aila victims were therefore surviving without food, shelter, drinking water with little hope in sight. Given this situation, Ambuja Realty tried to reach out to the Aila victims. The Operation On the afternoon of 4th June, the Ambuja team rushed to the Bombay Road godown of OTS Limited to arrange for the relief material. They packed the chaul and dal into 5:1 ratio for a family and loaded them in the truck along with other material. The next day at 5am, the team started for Dhamakhali. After reaching there, the relief was offloaded into two motorised boats and by 8.30am four boats dispersed for two different islands. The team for Kumirmari at South 24 Parganas reached around 11am and the team heading for Shamshernagar in North 24 Parganas reached its destination at 12.30pm. Shamshernagar was also the last hamlet on the Indian side. People were already waiting for relief on the ghaats at Shamshernagar. However, the team learnt that some relief was already reaching the victims at Shamshernagar but the remote corners were totally neglected. The team made it its mission to reach out to these victims who were without any aid even after two weeks of Aila having raged havoc. Accordingly, the team divided itself into subgroups and penetrated deep into the most affected locations. In total they catered to 8 different locations including Haridaskathi, Parghumti, Kalitala and Shamshernagar. The 17 tonnes relief that was distributed included rice, dal, drinking water, baby food, zeoline, cooking oil, match sticks, saris, lungis, dresses for children, torches, ORS, medicines, biscuits, and potatoes. They also organised a medical camp at Kalitala which was manned by four doctors and distributed a lot of medicines. Some patients were detected of severe diarrhoea at this camp and were immediately admitted to a hospital. The feedback received from the victims was overwhelming. The whole operation was backed by Ambuja Realty’s in-house Relief Committee to whom the employees donated generously. Mr. Harshavardhan Neotia, Chairman & Managing Director – Ambuja Realty personally donated generously and helped raise a sizeable corpus. |

Udayan Shalini |
The Udayan Shalini Fellowships have given wing to many deserving students who, despite their academic excellence, have had to grapple with their family’s financial pressures that naturally beget what the celebrated economist Amartya Sen termed ‘poverty of opportunities’. Through constant support, care and mentoring, many young girls have discovered that ‘there is nothing like a dream to create the future’. And many futures are being shaped so that more and more dreams are born. And nurtured till fruition. Proving that with a little help and belief, nothing is impossible. With support from Ambuja Realty, some of the awardees have gone on to specialise in subjects like engineering and have been offered plum assignments by three corporate giants. |
